Rock Bolt

Rock bolts or anchors play a very important role as a systematic support during the excavation stage of tunneling or mining work. Rock bolting carries the tension and shear forces to prevent the displacements of rock mass. Friction force from the grout body also enables rock bolt to prevent the loosening of different geology layers. The rock bolt support is designed for two installation purposes. The so-called pre-stressed rock bolt fulfills the immediate pre-tensioned requirement in loose rock geology, whereas the so-called grout (mortar) rock bolt passively secures the displacement after mortar grout is cured. The anchorage materials to fulfill the requirements of both pre-stressed and grout rock bolts are described in the section entitled “Anchoring materials (for rock bolting)”.

Based on different geology conditions and physical performances of tunneling rock bolts, there are different designs including the following:

- Fully threaded rock bolts: for cost effectiveness, greater loading capacity and easy connection on site
- Self-drilling anchor: for extremely fragile geology to reduce the installation time
- TITANEX friction swell rock bolt: for applying pre-force to surrounding geology and achieve quick installation
